An alternative 'slant' I was aware of, and found entirely unconvincing.

but although superficial similarities between some passages in Dvorak's 6th symphony and Brahms's 2nd have been observed, you really couldn't mistake one work for the other.

It is somewhat notable that Dvořák's 6th was originally planned in D minor with the first movement in 2/4—so the original parallel was Beethoven's 5th, and one theme in the finale is pretty explicit about this, being an inversion of a theme in the finale of the Beethoven


—but he changed this to D major and 3/4 after coming in contact with Brahms's 2nd. That said I see the relationship between the two symphonies as more in the spirit of friendly competition than influencer and influenced.
