Then are we not going round in circles ? Many of these other completions including those fhgl referred to above ( and I have some idea this Beethoven 10 was another Brian Newbould work - are very unmemorable .

The amount of material available to Payne and his completion of his elaboration of the sketches on the other hand is far from unmemorable . The work to me is as valid as Cooke's version of Mahler 10 or the Bruckner 9 completion recorded by Rattle . JLW also makes the compelling point re Enescu's 4th and 5th.

Personally I think that Payne did a remarkable job, and achieved the aim of giving us all the chance to hear some of the wonderful material that Elgar was creating & assembling for the Symphony. The only part I'm not keen on is the finale's coda, which for me doesn't work. My gut feeling is that Elgar really did intend to use the same ending for both the slow movement and finale, hence why he was so evasive when asked by Billy Reed about the conclusion, and also his indecision on the ordering of the inner movements. ending the slow movement & finale the same way would have been an exceptionally daring idea. There are also the two fragments which Anthony Payne chose not to use but feel to me as if they are part of a transition from the descending conclusion of the 2nd subject towards the slow movement material. Indeed I've improvised this several times from the sketches and it always instinctively the same way. Elgar's famous quote about 'music being in the air all around us' and us just having to take what we need comes to mind. I would love to discuss this with Anthony Payne.
I quite like Newbould's realisations of the Schubert symphonies especially the 7th in E major. The results seem sound to me, except in places for the orchestration, where the balance seems wrong. It would be interesting to hear a period instrument performance of Newbould's realised scores as this could possibly aid in clarifying Newbould's orchestration.

Beethoven 10 was elaborated by Dr Barry Cooper.

I don't think Marrtyn Brabbins has recorded the Elgar/Payne yet, has he?

The 3rd symphony has also been discussed very recently on the 'Elgar' thread. Might it be worth merging them?

I should rather they stayed separate as it is a very specific topic.

I agree. Let's keep the real thing separate!

I think you need to revisit your OP. It's a very simple reference to #3 and only asks if performances or recordings are dwindling. Would be tidier to have it under one heading. Can this be done, ferney? After all, that is the protocol and Barbirollians has made such requests previously on other topics.
