    What’s Your Favourite Symphony?

I’ve been thinking about this. So I thought I put a thread up here and see what comes up.

I’m afraid there’s only one symphony allowed.

    I’ve no hesitation with mine.

    Mahler: Symphony No.6.
    Recording Berliner Philharmoniker, Claudio Abbado.
    Don’t cry for me
I go where music was born

    J S Bach 1685-1750

    Hiya maestro,

Well this is not an immovable feast for me as it does tend to change over time, but at this point I would choose:

    Mahler Symphony No. 2 'Resurrection'

      What a question!
      OK then: Sibelius 5th (BPO/Karajan)

        Ok.

        Beethoven. Symphony no.6. 'The Pastoral'.

Leonard Bernstein is my favourite performance. Either his New York Philharmonic or Vienna Philharmonic versions will do.

Brahms Symphony No 2 in D*
Many fond memories for me, both as a player and a listener.

          * But without that 1st movwment repeat. I swear those "1st time bars" were added by somebody else.

Gorgeous piece, HS. I remember hearing the late Sir Alex Gibson play it with the (R)SNO in 1977 which was my first experience of it. I borrowed the Boult/LPO tape from my local library and promptly word it out.

Too many great ones to give an answer and ask me later and it will have changed!

If I can choose only one then it's going to have be one that defines everything I feel about life and the power that music has to enrich life. There are still several candidates but reluctantly choosing one only I'd go for -

Mahler: Symphony No 2 ('Resurrection') preferably in the 1984 Christmas Day concert performance by Haitink and the Concertgebouw.
"The sound is the handwriting of the conductor" - Bernard Haitink
