Spirit of Bach; Music Matters, Sat 23/12/17; 12:15

Fresh from her BaL on the "Brandenburg" Concertos, Sara Mohr-Pietsch presents a Music Matters special edition as part of the Bach mini-fest. In separate items, she is joined by Rinaldo Alessandrini, Marcus du Sautoy, Steven Devine and Tara Shears, and Matt Herskowitz, and Gabriela Montero.

Sara Mohr-Pietsch explores what lies beneath Bach's music with Angela Hewitt and others.

(Repeated on Sunday evening at 9:30.)

Terribly sorry to hear of David Watkin's illness, which I hadn't previously known.

Same here. Though I already have his Cello Suites recordings as mp3s, I have just ordered the CD double album, partly to add the booklet notes.

Marcus de Sautoy's contribution was a waste of time, I thought; oversimplistic and superficially anecdotal - the sort of thing that repels me in the "guest spots" on Essential Classics.

... I have found this to be the case each time he's on the wireless - and he's on often enuff, being one of 'Lord' Melvyn's faves, and an all-round useful rent-a-quote. Lord, he's pleased with himself. At least this time he didn't trot out his trumpet playing prowess...

I heard a bit of the programme and didn't much like what Gabriela Montero had to say.

Alison's got one of them - or quite often says she has.
Never seen one. What are they?

                    Go on then ...
I think she's a lovely wayward pianist with heaps of personality.
