I only really know the 'superstar' version under Karajan from 1969.
This recording caused some consternation at EMI, apparently: it was the recording that brought von K back to the company, after he'd been seduced away by the blandishments of DG. Yet Peter Alward was dismayed by the sound quality, which he considred inferior to EMI"s previous stereo recording under Sargent.
I enjoy the work: as someone said above, it's very convivial, even if it ultimately lacks profundity.
