This is certainly interesting, but relies on a spring mechanism. It's fine as long as the springs don't weaken at different speeds., but they must have considered this. Anything that rectifies the upright piano's major weakness is worth pursuing.

Thanks for this. Just wondering who might want one. Presumably, if you could afford the additional technology you're not far off being able to afford a lower end grand piano. It sounds as though it might have a lighter touch, though, and that would certainly interest a lot of older players and learners.

There were one or two well-known piano makers who solved this problem on a very few uprights, including (IIRC) Bösendorfer pre-WW2, but it proved too expensive to continue production. Only a half-dozen such Boseys came to this country, one presently near Land’s End. Thus a trill would be possible without the keys having to come all or most of the way back up with each repetition.
