Listening Service on Shostakovich Symphony 15

I only caught the closing minutes while driving home from work. What I heard sounded decidedly subjective. No more really than Tom's personal impressions, rather than anything more evidence based. I will try again via the iPlayer but would welcome others' vies on this programme.

    I heard most of it
Yes, it was a personal view of the piece but I really enjoyed it. Someone talking about something they are really engaged with
I don't have a problem with it being "personal impressions"

      Typical Service breathless waffle.

Sunday late afternoon is a real disaster area on R3: Choir and Organ with SMP telling us about her, playing 'tracks', or telling us the name of the programme, or about the website, or what's on so-and so programme in a few days, or on HER prog next week and repeating the formula over and over like Siri for what feels like every five minutes.

And then THAT followed is by Service. Crikey.

No one could doubt Mr Service's commitment to the music after hearing this. I thought it interesting and informative and I quite like passionate advocacy of this kind.

That's worth a discussion in itself - never mind Shostakovich.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

            Ok

It is always good to hear people who are passionate about their subject
which is why Tony P always comes accross so well
I know someone who presented at this one https://boringconference.com which was anything but

I have still not listened to the whole programme but from the closing section I did hear it seems to have been based on his Guardian piece on the 15th of some years ago.

I've giving up listening to him. Continuous breathless jabber, constantly talking over the music.

It's a pity, because he seems to be well informed.

Given the guff about the end being about nothing, and the various allusions Tom Service drew from the score, he seemed to me to miss a trick. Surely he can hear a sly echo of the final tocsin of the 11th in the the final glockenspiel note of the 15th?

The conclusion of the Fifteenth is, of course, a Tic-tocsin.
