Thank you for that fascinating list of concerts. A busy conductor and a busy orchestra indeed. I wonder whether this is a complete list of the Halle concerts for those years (quite a lot of which would have been conducted by Maurice Handford) or just those where Barbirolli was conducting.

The Mahler 2nd on the 13th of May, 1964 with Erna Spoorenberg and Janet Baker, was the overwhelming performance that I mentioned previously. It was the occasion of some anniversary and JB gave a short speech to the audience, during which he said something like "This is a great orchestra, and [I know that because] I have conducted many of the great orchestras of the world."

Hi Johnb, If you want a definitive list of JB's concerts with the Halle then look no further than The Barbirolli Society's Book 'Barbirolli A chronicle of a career' produced in association with the RAM. It's available as a small booklet with a CD or a hardback volume. You'd find that you (probably) saw Gerontius on 5th April 1964 in Manchester and he recorded it in late December that year. It includes all the concerts he conducted with orchestras from around the world and makes for fascinating reading.

Interesting comment, ferney, but actually with the possible (!) exception of Herbert Von K, the other soloists all played with JB. Given the adulation that JB received from the Berlin concertgoers it might surely have been possible that Herbert von K slipped in behind the stalls one night to see why people were so keen on JB!!
