    Clemmie's new book...

I've asked Mrs. PG to give me Clemancy Burton-Hill's new book ' A Year of Wonder' via Santa Claus this year. The author suggests a piece of music to listen to every day for the year. From what I've seen from the Amazon sample there are works I simply don't know so it'll be an interesting exercise to see if I can trace recordings and have the discipline to listen to each example every day for a year.

I did borrow a book by Classic FM on the same theme back in the early summer but there was no way I was going to be able to keep the book out for a whole year and I didn't really want to buy it.

I see it as a good way to hear new music and try to plan ahead so I have the music on the day concerned.

Here's a bit more about it.
Taking one tune at a time, Clemency Burton-Hill explores how people have used the power of music to connect for a thousand years

    Here's the author introducing it
Have you ever heard a piece of music so beautiful it stops you in your tracks? Or wanted to discover more about classical music but had no idea where to begi...

I tried a similar thing with this book by Fiona Maddocks, which is along the same lines:

Actually some pretty good discoveries, and she keeps each contribution short enough to not get irritating..

Ah, as usual Ferney is first past the post :)

... and a wider range of repertoire than CB-H's "from Bach to Strauss".

I liked the Observer's 'magnificent treasury' (order it from the Guardian Bookshop), but I'm not sure I'd be interested in a book that limits itself to "songs" - might recommend it for the Observer reviewer, though. But for CB-H, herself, I'd say it does sound like a bit of a pot-boiler.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I thought that about the song limitation too, and wonder what she considers a song by Bach.
Maybe it's a song in the iTunes sense!

I think it was. Hence my comment that I'd recommend it for the reviewer. Under the headline it refers to the music as 'tunes' ("Taking one tune at a time …").

Another sign of age, I fear. I saw the title of this thread and was looking forward to reading about a book about Lady Spencer-Churchill. What a disappointment; I skimmed through the article about the R3 announcer's book in the Telegraph this morning - a very quick skim.

Sounds like a good Christmas present for a friend. Bit cautious about spending on music books, though. Bought the set of Classic fm Handy Guides - on impulse :¬( - mainly because I knew next to nothing about film and video game music. I know a bit more than nothing now, but still not much, and the fields are changing all the time, so the books will date quickly. Prefer to buy recordings.

CB-H was interviewed (by John Humphrys no less!) on the 'Today' programme this morning. She promised to return at a future date. It appears that the longest piece discussed in the book is 25 minutes of Bruckner's 7th.

I feel another 'competition' coming on.
What are the words that best go with this song, I wonder?
