CB-H was interviewed (by John Humphrys no less!) on the 'Today' programme this morning. She promised to return at a future date. It appears that the longest piece discussed in the book is 25 minutes of Bruckner's 7th.

I didn't catch what the piece of Rachmaninov choral music she introduced was (not from the Vespers) as it was faded down after 3 seconds or so, it didn't seem a good piece to choose to make an impact with a Today listener, but then there was the story of Rachmaninov leaving Russia on a sled with some money, and few scores / possessions....... so I suppose that was felt likely to appeal.

I offered to send a list of works to a relative, not a close relative, as a survey / intro to Classical Music -its not often I come across someone that interested. Now I'm wondering whether to get his relatives to give this book to him for Christmas. (I'll have a look in a bookshop).

I was admittedly only just waking up, but I was pretty sure I heard her declaring something to the effect that people are being told that there is only one way to listen to music properly. By whom, I want to know? To me it sounded like yet another "anti-elitist" shibboleth. If correct, that alone would be enough to put me off any ideas about buying her book.

Well, today being the 1st of January, I've started on the journey Ms. Burton-Hill has initiated.

First work up was the 'Sanctus' from Bach's b minor Mass. Alas, owing to the inaccessibility of my Bach CDs due to stuff being put in the back bedroom for the festivities I called on Youtube to provide the music required. What I settled for was Jochum's recording. The sheer massiveness of his forces were somewhat diminished by the poor computer speakers but what REALLY made it intolerable were the youtube comments.

'This is great music... FOR DICKHEADS' being one of the more carefully reasoned ones.

In future, I'll make more of an effort to mine my cd collection!

I thought that about the song limitation too, and wonder what she considers a song by Bach.
Maybe it's a song in the iTunes sense!

A song could be a chapter from an audio book then, or a Linguaphone Spanish lesson.
