    31st July 1917 - 10th November 2017 - Passchendaele

    On this day, in 1917, one of the bloodiest, most awful, harrowing battles was fought.

    Hence some of the music io have been playing recently has reflected this.

    RVW Dona nobis pacem; Mass in G minor
    Howells: Requiem; Tippett: A Child of Our Time;
    Elgar: Sursum Cordal Elegy; Sospiri.

    My father was at Passchendaele

    He came away with a couple of wounds and the Croix de Guerre (the Belgian equivalent of our Victoria Cross)

    He refused to say why it was awarded and always maintained that it must have been meant for some other poor blighter who had the same name.

    The family have a framed citation, signed by King Leopold - and, of course, the medal itself.

    I will listen to this prom and record it.

    HS

    BTW If you wish to know more about Fred's experiences in the Great War, PM me your email address and I will send you a copy of "Dad's War" which is his own account of his experiences from Gallipoli to Armistice Day.

      Thanks HS, for sharing this. The music in question is what I have been listening to, recently.

      If you haven't seen the programme on BBC2 last night, please do. Very moving, apart from Kate's outfit.

        Might I suggest an alteration to the Thread title, Bbm? "31st July - 10th November 1917".

          Good idea, Ferney. Could you put that in, please?

            The TV presentation at yesterday's commeration event, was awful. IMO. Rather a lot of padding out.
