We both joined the BBC in the same week in October 1957, as PTOs ( Probationary Technical Operators )
I spent a little while with Bernie in his parent's house in Eltham, fixing egg boxes to the Ceiling to improve the sound!
He had a unique distinction at the time as the first man in BH Control Room to get a job in production at the time when it was unheard of.
This was partly because he spent all his spare time at Saturday Club sessions at the Playhouse and other outside studios. The producer of Saturday Club, Jimmie Grant, was one of the kindest people I ever met. He gave me personal help at a difficult time and I've never forgotten.
Bernie and all that team were a great crowd who were rather good at upsetting the powers that be, which was hardly surprising because in those days it wasn't even permitted to use any equalisation to improve the sound. What came out of the microphone was expected to be all you needed to get good results.
After I moved to TV Bernie and I lost touch, but we did have a few happy reminiscences after he retired to the West Country. Brian Matthew was the great survivor, but we lost the mythical character called Rotherhithe, whose exploits entertained us on Saturday mornings!
