Yes, it really is, especially Ave maris stella which is the PMD piece I come back to most often; I think it's a masterpiece of chamber music capable of comparison with any other.

I assume that this is P B-S's modertn instrument cycle. I have (and frequently play) his cycle on 5 historic instruments, but this is on Arcana. Do others have a preference between the two cycles? I have not heard the full RCA cycle.

Utterly gorgeous... several works new to me here like the dreamy, Chopinesque Ballade for Piano/Orchestra, the Cello/Orchestra Elegy etc...I love the fluidity of form, the sense of shape-within-improv...
Joy of streaming, that one lingers with music one might normally pass by...

(It's OK - the Pavane and Masques et Bergamasques are here too...!)
Looks good - must explore both volumes - but secret?

If you want to see, as well as hear, Mackerras in the Wingfield edition, there is a Supraphon DVD. Apart from its single disc release, there is a boxed set of works by Janacek and Martinu which also contains it, along with a CD of the revised version with some minor amendments which are also to be found in the later critical edition of that score. That boxed set is a must at its current price. Not a dud in it.
                Set arrived this morning.

                But I'm confused (not difficult!).
Both the CD and DVD versions of the Glagolitic Mass are credited as being 1926, rev 1928, but the CD has 8 movements and the DVD 9 (it both begins and ends with the Intrada). The timing of the Introduction is 2’57” (CD) and 3’50” (DVD) and that of the Gospodi is 3’18” and 4’50”.
Looks like more than 'minor amendments' to me!

Enjoying the set immensely so far, even if its purchase has led to the dilemma noted on the Culling CDs thread!

The DVD is of the Wingfield Edition of the original score. Following the original proramme he has the Intada at both ends. The CD is of an ammended revised version, similar in most ways to the recent critical edition of the revised version. The Intrada is performed at the end only.

                    Thanks.
Certainly enjoyed the CD version just now.
Movement timing discrepancies still look odd though (but I'm not getting into another Music for SPC-type discussion here!).

Anyone interested in this historic concert, and who happens to be in the region of the Festival Hall next year (Sunday afternoon, 15th March, 2020) can attend the Philharmonia's re-presentation of it, conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen - as the PO's concert season programme puts it "in a much warmer and more comfortable hall").
