The title actually lends itself to some lovely images with me of an old garden rake taking on a lfe of its own and over a period of time making its way across a garden plot. It would make a good children’s story, maybe having encounters with other implements such as a watering can, maybe a trowel or a dibber!

On to symphonies 1-3 here now off SACD, and they are simply among the greatest I've ever heard, going back to Toscanini 1939 or Mengelberg 1940. I can't recall hearing better sound off any stereo Beethoven issues: so full, transparent, warm, weighty and present; but with a lovely mellow top end allowing high-level replay.
There's a "universality" of approach and "interpretation" (or lack of it, in any interventionist sense) here which is immediately apparent; and in the climaxes of the Eroica, often beggars description. If they manage to to record and release 6-9, this will be among the greatest of all such cycles, (howsoever numerous they now are) without a doubt.

I bought this in 2020 but was supersaturated with Beethoven back then, and never gave it the eminently-deserved attention. What a soul-salving gift it has been in the last few weeks!
