At the end of what has been a very difficult year, time to see out the old and look forward to the new with the two composers I treasure above all others, namely Bach and Haydn.

    Today :-

    Haydn - Symphonies 60 / 70 and 90 followed by Symphonies 22 / 102 and 86 - both discs CBSO / Rattle ( EMI )

Wonderfully fresh and sparkling performances, from far away times when Rattle would just let the music flow and speak for itself.

Tomorrow - Bach Cantatas with Harnoncourt and Suzuki.

Do you ever think that Sir Simon’s happiest music making was with the CBSO - they gained so much from each other!

Yes, I do have the impression that is the case Cloughie. AFAIK I have all the CBSO / Rattle recordings and most of them feature regularly in my listening, which certainly isn't the case with his subsequent recordings with the BPO.

                      Noted!

Earlier on I listened to two of the CDs in Kuijken's Bach cantata series. They're growing on me although I still have the impression that there were still issues with OVPP that he hadn't really solved before his more recent recordings of the big vocal works.

                        Some recent listening here:

                        New Year's Eve

Having traditionally (until two years ago, when our friends came to see us and our hew house instead) visited friends in Gloucestershire for NYE/NYD, it had to be

                        Lang Lang
Wow! Not necessarily my go-to version, but superb sound, and in many places a wonderful insightful interpretation that brought out lines I'd not specifically noticed before.

                        Yesterday (not necessarily in order)

The English Connection (decidedly NOT celebrating Brexit, but because it has a version of the Tippett Corelli variations that I hadn't heard before)
                        ASMF/Marriner (ASV)

                        Schoenberg

                        Isabelle Faust/Swedish Radio SO/Harding
(I must listen to the Hahn recording again!)

                        Zvezdolikiy
Symphonies of wind instruments (1920 version)
                        Philharmonia/Craft

Once I see Frieder Bernius mentioned I sit up and take notice. His (and Václav Luks's) championing of Zelenka's music have figured highly in my 2020 listening, marking that other anniversary which was overshadowed by Beethoven.
