I have the three Tortelier Chandos CDs, so must have a Dutilleux session soon and give them all another spin.
I have Isaac Stern playing the violin concerto too (ONF/Maazel), coupled with his early recording of the Bernstein Serenade; I would imagine that the Chandos is a better (and better recorded) performance, but I don't think I've listened to them in close succession.
Whenever I see or hear the composer’s name I always think ‘ I must away, duty lurks’. I have the Bychkov Sym 2 which I will give a whirl!

There are actually four. I too thought there were only three - hence the mistake.

This is the boxset - bought it as long ago as 2000! Such a tiny oeuvre, such a great and innovative voice.
And for me the start of a great and lifelong love and adventure...

A bit misleading as the rather brief Shadows of Time has a disc all to itself...

Not duty Cloughie! Pure sensuous sonic pleasure.... drink deep and indulge the hedonism....
The editions to choose from.... Morlot (Seattle SM), Tortelier (Chandos), Graf (Arte Nova, under composer's supervision), and the Naxos with various conductors....some good earlier individual releases, not least Munch with No.2...

Some bigger (if less consistent) boxes rounding them up, best accessed via streaming....

                Ah! I hadn't appreciated that!

I have the Boston/Ozawa (Erato) version of The shadows of time, the world première recording, which could be why the later Chandos issue skipped my attention.

Dutilleux: The Shadows of Time. Warner Classics: 9029540920. Buy download online. Seiji Ozawa

Steady now Jayne - Hedonism needs a bit of notice - however I don’t know where Bychkov fits into your league table but the No2 and Metaboles sounded pretty good to me!

                      Bernstein: Serenade
                      Stern/Symphony of the air/Bernstein

Dutilleux: Violin concerto (L'arbre des songes)
                      Stern/ONF/Maazel

Not out of any sense of duty, but while tackling today's crossword, so a more focused listening required tomorrow!

One of my earliest Dutilleux albums, came out just after the Tortelier, very impressive, probably still stands up against the others today. That cover - red, white blue and yellow! Fascinating assessment in Sounds in Retrospect at the time, can't remember the date though...

Can't ask better than that! Duly ordered. Thanks, Edgy, for the recommendation. It will take me back to being in a damp basement flat in a Georgian terrace in Edinburgh, freezing to death but buoyed by the Vainberg (sic) and by Tippett's 2nd Symphony ... such a long, long time ago, alas

Tchaikovsky vln.conc.on Essential Classics, Patricia Kopatchinskaja playing the last movement at such a breakneck speed that I thought the CD had malfunctioned. Did she do it for a bet?
