    Sibelius Symphony No.3.
Berlin Symphony Orchestra/Kurt Sanderling. Denon Japan CD (from Ariola-Eurodisc). Rec.1970

So hard to get right, I feel the 3rd works best, the less the conductor does. Set each movement in motion, let it flow, let it grow...Sanderling never obstructs it. So when the finale theme emerges fully, sublimely - one of my favourite moments in all Sibelius.....eloquent, effortless perfection.

I love the sobriety of this reading; set close and a little dry, but those so-distinctive, agile, velvety, slightly muted strings are the more pleasurable. My favourite non-Scandinavian 3rd.

                  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcCzfj_otVU , followed by https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcCzfj_otVU

Superb quality video (watching on 50" plasma) with more than acceptable 128kbps aac audio. Both URLs saved to USB stick via Video Downloadhelper (Firefox add-on) and played back through Oppo UDP-203 and Yamaha/Mission/Tannoy surround set-up. Outstanding musicianship, as expected, from Shujaat Khan and Zakir Hussain performing rag Janjhuti, both these Ustads I first heard play nearly 39 years ago when both were not that long out of their youth.

[Zakhir looking all too much like a sort of musical Paul McCartney, from some angles. (no apologies to Le Grand Baton ]

That seems to be played by Irena Grafenauer, Maria Graf, Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, Sir Neville Marriner - I have that, and several others on CD, and even some versions on LP from before CDs came in. This one has elaborate cadenzas.

My first recording IIRC was with Yehudi Menuhin, Elaine Shaffer and Marilyn Costello and the Philharmonia - https://www.discogs.com/Yehudi-Menuh...elease/3022841

I enjoyed it at the time.

Saw the Iceland SO just before we were all locked up. I was surprised at what a big orchestra it is (can be).
                          Very good orchestra.
