Helping keep things calm ( ish) round here !!

Nothing on the minster website that I could see about the current state of services or indeed if the building remains open, which is pretty poor, imho.

We were just ( on the way back from a half empty Sainsburys) asking the same question about Salisbury.

TBH Evensong would be a a good antidote right now, and 2 metre separation shouldn't be an issue.......

Ok , my idea for some lockdown , sorry "Social Distancing" threads.

Take a box set or series of discs, or whatever, set up an individual thread, and do a quick review of each disc.

And let's hope nobody has long enough to complete Bach 333 or the Karajan complete DG before things normalise !!

THis morning, some music from the Avant Garde Project, primarily because so much of the music, and it is extremely varied ,, seems to come from times where the musicians involved seemed to be so unafraid of the future.

Starting, randomly, with installment 106, American Electronic music. I'll report back on any real winners !

( The Roger Reynilds piece is absent, presumably now available elsewhere).

Currently listening to Sallinen Symphony 6 on this station. Don't know this composer at all, but so far very enjoyably atmospheric.

I have this 2CD set (in a different incarnation), with Symphonies 4 and 5 and other works.
A composer worth exploring, I would say.

Sold !! ( Not keen on the cover, but it definitely looks worth a punt)
Thanks for the suggestion. The radio station is worth a listen. Not heard any adverts for events where you have to run faster than Beethoven or whatever , yet !!

                      Oops!
Should have looked further, as the incarnation I have is cheaper, but with a possibly even less attractive cover:

I spent Christmas 2015 glorying in this set of Aulis Sallinen, symphonic intégrale with the Horn, Cello, and Violin Concerti - all three of which are some of his best music...........

So that is the grande référence...
The BIS De Preist efforts in 4&5 are good too, but the CPO box has even better sound.

Just reprinted some comments on Sallinen here....

Don't forget the Composers' Sub-Forum, its a great resource....
BeefOven used to say "what about this one Jayne"....which always inspired me to offer some brief survey or other.... the good old bad old days....
