I'm a big fan of Jakub Hruša - and like very much his earlier Exton recording from Tokyo. This new one is better played with a more rounded recording (it sounds fine as a 24/48 download). Not a work I necessarily want to hear very often but would certainly return to this recording with pleasure.
I listened to just the first movement on headphones last night, and I wasn’t that knocked out, to be honest. I like Hrusa, and obviously need to give this a proper listen, but my first impression was of slightly unfocussed sound, and underplayed drama.

Hopefully will get a proper listen tonight, and prove myself wrong !!

I was initially a bit disappointed with the sound (even as a HiRes file) but found that turning up the volume quite a lot helped (not as well-recorded as Tomas Netopil in Essen, I thought). But I do like the performance.

              UB40. The Very Best of 1980 - 2000

Mrs. PG has all their albums but I found this compilation today. Turns out she doesn't have this one! Another pound well spent.

Ah, ok . Good. Sort of confirms what I thought, but keeps my hopes up.

                  Thanks HD.

Thanks Jayne. Sounds well worth a listen. Barro likes these works, ( as I do) be good to hear his views too.

Don’t forget there is a set of recordings on the Avant Garde Project, downloadable for free, from Ensemble 13 Baden Baden.

It's just occurred to me that I've finally found an upside to Brexit!!

I've listened to Beethoven's Ninth so much more than I would normally have!

Thanks Pasters, youve put me in the mood for the Choral.

Time to listen to the VPO/Nelsons I think.

Bruckner: Symphony No. 3 in D Minor (1873 Original Version Ed. Leopold Nowak 1977)

Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra/Herbert Blomstedt (from the Bruckner Symphonies 1 - 9 BPO own label set)

I can't say that the release of this set got my blood racing but, as it is available from 7 Digital as a 24/48 download for the princely sum of £11.99 (no notes; no fancy box; no Blu Ray; but as cheap as chips for all nine symphonies) and as I read an enthusiastic review somewhere, I've duly downloaded it. Worth the money for this performance alone (from 2017). Unsurprisingly, very similar to his Leipzig recording. Beautifully structured, HB keeps the music moving which, in this version of the symphony, is important as the (longish) first movement can in less skilful hands fail to cohere as a whole. Link to the download:
