Listened to part of Mendelssohn 3 CoE Nezet-Seguin on Classic FM Full Works on my way back from choir this evening - sounds an excellent performance from what I heard.

I suppose none of us are suffering from a lack of Brahms Symphony cycles, but for the last week I’ve been enjoying a Blu Ray of Paavo Jaarvi leading his Bremen Orchestra in the works (regrettably no Haydn Variations, Overtures, or Serenades). This very much 21st Century Brahms, HIPP informed but with modern instruments. Tempos are swift without feeling rushed. The Orchestra doesn’t have the sheen of the top notch but plays well on its own terms. I particularly like the way the Conductor brings out the counter melodies and cross rhythms without unduly spotlighting them

Very good that. I have Mariss Jansons’s recording with the same orchestra. Be good to hear a comparison with these two, I think.

Dvořák: Symphony no. 8 in G major op. 88
Mahler: Symphony no. 4 in G major *

Judith Raskin (*), Cleveland Orchestra / George Szell

It was so good to re-visit these wonderful recordings. Both bring back memories of multiple listenings in my younger vinyl days.

I remember getting to know both works via Szell recordings but The Dvorak was from when it was known as the 4th on the Ace of Clubs Concertgebouw/Szell recording!

                    Manfred Symphony. Tchaikovsky.

                    LSO / Markevitch.

the brass blasts at the end of the first movement rather understated I thought. Love the sound though.

Latest heroic rescue acts of editing and reconstruction from the BIS series ....the Sinfonietta, something of a Concerto for Orchestra, must be the most uproarious, outrageous, certainly the noisiest of all the late "Greek folk/popular style" Skalkottas works yet to be brought to playability (there are many still in the barely legible, manuscript-only shadows...)...
.....the earlier concertante miniatures show more of his Schoenberg/20s/30s/Berlin tutored and influenced spikiness, and very refreshingly too...

More hearings should enable the densely eventful Sinfonietta to open up a little more..... at least I hope so!
This has arrived and I've only had the opportunity to listen to it once. My reactions have been very mixed as the welter of invention veers crazily through original, wonderful, electrifying, concentrated, lax, colourful, unusual, gnomic and, occasionally, banal. But... it's wormed its way into my brain and it's certainly my outstanding CD buy of this decade. Thank you, Jayne for your enthusiastic and repeated recommendations which, like the disc itself, became impossible to ignore.
In its lighter numbers, of which there are plenty, some of the piccolo lines are extravagantly stratospheric!
