The Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Walter Süsskind.

This is from the latest Warner Box 4 disc set of the studio recordings of this great artist who, alas, died in a plane crash when she was only 30.

Beethoven. Violin Concerto. Op.61. Sibelius. Violin Concerto. Op.47

      Christian Tetzlaff, violin

Deutsches Symphonie-Orchestra, Berlin conducted by Robin Ticciati.

This was a long requested Christmas gift that I've been looking forward to hearing. I've heard so many great things from other contributors here that it's been a struggle not to simply purchase it! However, it's well worth the wait. I'm not sure it's 'better' than the latest one from Mr. Kavakos, simply different. Both are marvellous in their very different ways.

pg, Back in the ‘searching for the affordable classics’ days there was an HMV Concert Classics LP with K364 and Sym 29. The soloists were Brainin and Schidlof aka half of the Amadeus SQ, they were accompanied by The Netherlands Chamber Orchestra and David Zinman - I guess he would have been in his late 20s then, but I remember it as a very good recording and performance of the works.

                  No interval?

And how long between 1st mvt & 2nd in M2?

                  P.S. I've never heard BW's M2.

The interval was there but I tend not to write it in nowadays!

Walter's Mahler 2 was recorded in 1957/8 and, while it's in stereo, don't expect 21st century sonics. Having said that, the re-mastering done here is very good and it's a priceless historical document. Walter takes a brisk view of the score with it clocking in 79 minutes. This box isn't cheap but all of Walter's Mahler recordings are available in one of those Sony boxes and the re-mastering could well be identical.

I had that Walter M2 on lp, and I thought that the CD transfer sounds excellent. I bought a version from Japan that is a “Blue Spec” with some gimmicky materials in the CD, but it does compare well with the latest releases. Even on the plain vanilla CD version one can hear all the grunts of the Conductor, the air conditioning in the recording venue stopping and starting, and in one spot in I where someone has their music fall from the stand to the floor with a loud smack. More importantly, the Cellos and double basses have excellent solidity and the violins are sweet. The soloists might sound a tad earth bound compared with later recordings but I wouldn’t hesitate to buy this excellent recording on sonic grounds.

A charity shop find! Just listening, I'm aware that this is a piece I hardly know!

Now listening to one of the disc's companion pieces...
