        Beethoven: Violin Sonatas nos. 3, 6, 7 & 8
        Lorenzo Gatto (violin), Julien Libeer (piano)

        I couldn't resist it: I just had to return to this wonderful recording I first posted about here. Music-making as good as this can never grow stale.

        All through the four sonatas (the final disc in this partnership's survey of them all), I hung on every note, marvelling not only at the artistry of the musicians but also (as it should be) at Beethoven's genius. By the time I reached the wonderful Allegro vivace final movement of the 8th (such joyous music!) my original opinion that this is one of the discs of the year was triumphantly reinforced. This is life-enhancing stuff.

            The Lutoslawski I must hear. The Finnish conductor Hannu Lintu certainly is very enterprising.

                    ....20CCS continues....

                    Bartok Violin Concerto No.2 (plus alternative finale -1st version - very excitingly done);
                    Rhapsodies Nos. 1 & 2 (plus alternative versions).
                    Kelemen/Hungarian NPO/Kocsis. Hungaroton Bartok New Sereis SACD/CD.

                    Much recorded masterpiece, many great ones, this is probably still my favourite....gets the earthy/ethereal balance right, but still gets wild & unpredictable where it needs to......

                    (Otherwise... Tetzlaff/Lintu)...

                      Schumann.
                      Frauenliebe und Leben

                      Schubert . Lieder.

                      Schumann . Liederkreis.

                      Elly Ameling/Dalton Baldwin.

                      Proper singing. CD from the fantastic Philips Classics 50 CD box, which seems to have gone through the roof price wise now.

                      One of the best boxes I have ever bought, and this is a top CD IMO.

                          Love Elly. Coincidentally, I went to Wigmore for today's lunchtime performance (link), always having wanted to hear Elisabeth Kulman in the flesh. (One of the most enjoyble and rewarding song recitals I have attended in a while, incidentally). When got back I had to play some of her recordings, including her Frauenliebe which I didn't know and did find marvellous. Süsser Freund is such a restrained yet still sexy expression of marital love and I can't remember hearing the widow's emptiness of the last song Nun hast du mir done so movingly, with such exquisite sadness. It's on youtube.
