Beethoven: Symphony No. 7 and Die Wiehe des Hauses Overture (Anima Eterna, Immerseel). This the ZIG ZAG manifestation, rather than the re-issue under the Alpha label.

... in Proust's letter of 20 April 1918 to Jacques de Lacretelle he says : "Il n'y a pas de clefs pour les personnages de ce livre: ou bien il y en a huit ou dix pour un seul ... / ...

The Pierné theory is here, I think :

                Yesterday afternoon:
                Handel
                Dixit Dominus
                Laudate Pueri
Choir of King's College Cambridge, Stephen Cleobury

                Now:
I heard a voice (Weelkes, Gibbons, Tomkins)
Choir of King's College, Stephen Cleobury, Fretwork

I find that I have very few other Cleobury recordings (an Argo Howells collection, Faure and Duruflé Requiems, a compilation called Credo), with the highlight probably being the compilation of commissions for the Service of Nine Lessons and Carols (On Christmas Day).

It is worth starting a new thread: Stephen Cleobury's recorded legacy?

Stephen Cleobury was the organist in the 1974 St John's Cambridge recording of the Duruflé, the one that had me rushing to buy it after I heard an excerpt (Sanctus) on Record Review. I had forgotten about this later release from King's, but I have the earlier one with the ECO on EMI.

Never heard the work in this guise before - and am much impressed. I'm sure someone has mentioned this new(ish) download on another thread (Bryn?) - anyway, much recommended. Andrew Clements in the Grauniad even made it his release of the week, sometimes the kiss of death but not, I think, in this case.

"Saga" — Ballads by Schumann, Loewe, Jensen Schubert
Konstantin Krimmel (baritone), Doriana Tchakarova (piano)

                          Alpha Classics release. 2019 recording.

It's been a great pleasure to return to this (it appeared on Qobuz about a month ago). Singer and accompanist work wonderfully well together (indeed, 'accompanist' is a churlish word to use considering the vital role the piano plays in this repertoire). From the piano intro to Carl Loewe's haunting Tom der Reimer which opens the recital, it's proved even more difficult to stop listening this time round. Konstantin Krimmel is blessed with a wonderful baritone voice which he can vary at will to suit the atmosphere of each song, and his diction is superb throughout. Similarly, Doriana Tchakarova effortlessly employs story-telling mode. That opening track is a highlight, but then Loewe's setting of Geothe's Erlkönig is also a bit of a show-stopper, and the three songs by Adolf Jensen totally justify the inclusion of this composer, who was previously unknown to me.

And I have the “Saga” disc recommended by DublinJimbo above lined up for a listen. What a desperately unimaginative cover the CD has though.

... Kenneth Gilbert particularly liked the acoustics of the Salle des Gardes at Maintenon : as the name implies, it was the hall where the king's guards used to hang around while waiting for orders - they indulged in tobacco among other things, so the hall was lined with leather to absorb the noisome smells. And this produces, so he felt, an ideal acoustic for harpsichord playing. I don't know whether he is still there, but he used to live in one wing of the château ...
