I’ve been enjoying Andris Nelsons’s cycle of works by Shostakovich ‘The Stalin Years’. A very good idea indeed to create. An important addition to the catalogue. Nelsons hasmost certainly brought the BSO back into the realms where they belong. I do hope DG record all the Symphonies.

Not "The Stalin Years", BBN, but "Under Stalin's Shadow". The 2nd and 3rd Symphonies, both composed during the Stalin era, are not included and, strangely, the issue with the 4th and 11th does not bear either legend. While the 11th was composed some 4 years after Stalin's death, the 4th is surely that most clearly composed "under Stalin's shadow".

Indeed - and a very long shadow it was - more than a quarter century, indeed. I seem to recall that the original full score ms. "disappeared" and that a new one had to be created from the parts for the première at the end of 1961; given the number of scores thought lost that have turned up in Russia in the post-Soviet era (some by Roslavets in particular), I wonder if this one will ever resurface?...

Another good Shostakovich recording there Stan?

Now today would’ve been Maestro Claudio Abbado’s 86th birthday. So the rest of today’s listening will be recordings by him.

                          Schubert
                          Symphony No.8 in B minor D.759

                          Weiner Philharmoniker
                          Claudio Abbado.

Abbado born in 1933, Bbm - so he'd've been 86.
