        Tchaikovsky. Violin Concerto.

        Igor Oistrakh, violin.

The Pro Arte Orchestra conducted by Wilhelm Schüchter. 1957.

This is great moment for me! Goodness knows how much I've banged on about Ivor's recording with his Father David's recording on Melodyia from 1972 over the years and how it would probably be the one disc I would take to the mythical desert island. However, there's also this recording from 15 years before which has never, until now, made it to cd. I do have the Lp but having nothing to play it on hasn't helped me make a comparison.

Anyway, after years of waiting, it's finally available on the 'Milestones...' label with another 9 discs of the great man's work.

        Boots are being filled...

Recurrence-indulgence in this one....(Qobuz Studio 24/96 Naxos New Release.)

The Suites may seem pleasant makeweights at first, then they really seduce you slow...but the Saugefleurie (a sad tale of a lonely fairy who dies for love) is just gorgeous, a wonderful discovery, especially if you're a bit of a D'Indy fan already (it was the Chandos Gamba series that got me going). Warm, shimmering textures, soft horns deep in the mysterious forest, Royal Hunts and fatal passions.....if you like this kinda thing, then...etc.
"Permeated by Wagner's influence while remaining quintessentially French" as the note says.

Striking sound here - unusually warm, full and colourful. Perfect for this music.

Prompted by the new Turina thread in Composers:

                    Turina:
                    Sinfonía sevillana
                    Danzas fantásticas
                    Ritmos
                    La procesíon del Rocío

Castile and León Symphony Orchestra/Max Bragado Darman
                    (Naxos)

                    Pretty thin beer, I fear.
And, pace another thread, if this ended up in my culled CD pile, I don't in all honesty think that I would miss it.

Yes, I tend to agree. Pleasant, but don't do much for me.

I think Arnold's lighter, short works such as English, Scottish, Irish, Cornish & Welsh Dances, Tam O'Shanter, Beckus the Dandipratt, The Padstow Lifeboat et al are greatly under valued. I heard some of the Dances last night on CFM 'Full Works Concert' and they sound superb.

I used to play Arnold's Scottish Dances in our local school's orchestra circa 1979 and always enjoyed playing them. This cd is entitled 'Classic FM Morning March'. It's a nice selection but employs CfM's technique of ironing out the dynamics. Ok for £1 though!
