Beethoven - String Quartet No.11 ''Serioso'' in F minor, Op.95, Tokyo Quartet

I'm loving listening through these quartets again. Incredible stuff.

Just wondering, which of the Tokyo Quartet's recordings if these works you are listening to, the 'old' RCA set or the more recent survey on Harmonia Mundi?

Not sure. It doesn't say, perhaps someone could aurally identify?

I'm currently listening to no. 12. I find there is a kind of delirium within Beethoven, often lurking, threatening to overwhelm...

Ah, the licence is cited as being by SME (Sony Music Entertainment), so it's the earlier RCA (now owned by Sony) set.

I acquired that set a few years ago - it is wonderful. Very glad I snapped it up when I did; purely on a whim.

Likewise, though the price is still attractive. These recent posts have prompted me to look again for the one SACD (op. 74 and 95) of their later survey for Harmonia Mundi that I did not get at the time of their release. I found one in "Like New" condition for £9.25 (including p&p). Only half the members of the quartet as found on the RCA recordings remained at the time of those for the Harmonia Mundi SACDs.

                        Roussel Symphony No.3; No.4.
Lamoureux Orchestra/Charles Munch. Erato CDs from 2019 Roussel Edition.

Still stunned at the sonic improvement of the remaster here, even over some pretty good Erato original issues. New levels of power, subtlety and beauty revealed, and much better depth both tonally and spatially. Cluytens, Dutoit, Janowski and Eschenbach all have their distinctive attractions but this is still the unsurpassable Number One for these masterpieces - more gloriously so than ever now. It has a uniquely exquisite fizz and blare.

What a treat when a cherished classic returns refurbished…. and that climax in the 3rd’s adagio! How I anticipated that, and I wasn’t disappointed…
One of the great moments in the History of Recorded Sound. No-one gets even close to Munch’s ecstatic Dionysian release here. Those 1960s Parisian trumpets!

Currently on an Alkan binge as I recently bought Yui Morishita's 4th CD (ok, it was as mp3s as I'm not paying £40 for a single CD from Japan)...
                          Best regards,
