        Beethoven. The Piano Concertos

        Paul Lewis.

The BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by the late, great Jirí Bêlohlávek.

I've not heard this set before and, having started with no. 4, am really enjoying them.

(Discs courtesy of Edinburgh City Library).

I also borrowed Lewis' 'Diabelli Variations' so that may be next after the concertos.

                  Thank you for asking, BBM.

I've listened to 3, 4 & 5 and will listen to 1 & 2 this afternoon. They sound pretty good to me. I noticed details in the orchestral parts I've not really noticed before which is always a good reason to listen to an alternative version of a well known piece. Lewis sounds very convincing with no evidence of barnstorming or playing to the gallery. He seems, to me, to have a lovely touch.

                  Super recording too.

Oddly, there were a few doubting Thomas on Amazon but these people sometimes swim against the tide for effect. My own ears tell me they are extremely accomplished.

The Scottish National Orchestra under Sir Alexander Gibson. Recorded in the Usher Hall in 1978, shortly after I started attending their concerts. Happy days. (Chandos. A £ in the Capability charity shop!)

My earliest memory of being taken to a concert by my parents (Ayr Town Hall, c.1962) is of Alexander Gibson and the-then SNO playing 'The Swan of Tuonela' so that particular recording has much significance for me. Great buy!

I've played this cd on repeat this afternoon. (Mrs. PG is remarkably tolerant of my odd listening habits!). I've really enjoyed this disc and have benefited from getting to know the other three Lemminkäinen legends better. Very strange music but very potent for us Scots.

I've dug out my Decca Sound Mono Sound cube and am now listening to Eric Tuxon conducting the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra recorded in the 1950's. Very interesting approach although, imho, not as well played as the SNO version.

                              Janacek:

                              Sarka - Overture
                              Taras Bulba

The Cunning Little Vixen - suite
                              Sinfonietta

                              Czech Philharmonic Orchestra
                              Sir Charles Mackerras

Took delivery of this two CD set today. Performances and recordings can't be faulted but the set came without a booklet which surely cannot be right as it came new from Amazon in plastic wrapping. In addition, the box arrived cracked on the reverse. Not impressed but can't be bothered to complain though the lack of a booklet is most disappointing.

I think I'd be complaining, Pet. I wonder if other sets are affected. Was it DECCA?
