Oh, that is sad news - and he was far too young for such news to be appearing. My condolences to his family and friends - including, of course, to you.

Today, in response to other posts and sad news:

      Stravinsky: Agon (BSO/Leinsdorf)

Noel Rawsthorne playing on both Liverpool cathedral organs (in his and jean's memory), and just now a CD of Noel Rawsthorne's music in Priory's British Church Composer Series.

        William Walton. Violin Concerto.

        Kyung-Wha Chung, violin

The London Symphony Orchestra conducted by André Previn.

Terrific playing but, imho, not as great as Ida Haendel.

The Walton Violin concerto might make a good 'Recordings in Discussion' item.

We disagree here, PG. I think this is a really wonderful recording. One of the best.

The Walton violin concerto is one of favourite concertos. There are a number of excellent recordings. I grew up with Menuhin which is still my first choice for the tonal warmth and I also enjoy Haendel, Kennedy & Kyung Wha Chung.

                      Brahms
String Quartets OP.51 No.2; OP.67. Vegh Quartet, rec. 1954. Decca Heritage CD.

                      Beethoven
Diabelli Variations. Paul Lewis, HMCD 2011.

                      Schubert (vol.1) Symphony No.5 (c/w 3 & 8, not yet heard).
CBSO/Edward Gardner. Chandos 24/96 via Qobuz Studio. New Release 2019.
A really lovely, vivacious small-orchestral performance beautifully recorded in the Town Hall. But do we really need another cycle from this source, with so many wonderful Schubert sets and individual recordings in the world already? (They could at least have given us a 4-movement 8th...)
Churlish perhaps but it is a shame these great orchestras so often tread the familiar paths...

Sounds fine to me, most of the finished unfinished are fairly unconvincing whatever logic is applied to their sources! The 4 Mendelssohn CDs would make a good boxed set at the right price!

I'm sure it's wonderfully politically incorrect.

Call me stubborn, a luddite, a stick in the mud or whatever you want but to me two perfect movements of the eighth do not need the addition. For whatever reason Schubert left them be. I regard trying to finish the symphony on the same level as the current fashion of taking the recordings of Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Frankklin, Buddy Holly, The Carpenters and even more a travesty the Beach Boys, and giving them an orchestral make over with the RPO. This things are what they were for a reason. Leave them be!
