Famously, the 6th was his only symphony that Bruckner did not have second thoughts about, though Mahler messed around with it before conducting it. Yes, it is widely regarded as Bruckner's 'ugly duckling'. I, however, love it. The more I got to hear it, the more it became a stately swan.

Now listening to/watching, Bruckner 6 (Münchner Philharmoniker, Celi) on from DVD.

I adore the Sixth, too: much better than #4, and up there with 5, 7, & 9.

Are those the same recordings that EMI brought out on CD?

Strangely, the credits suggest that while the Sony DVD is compiled from concerts from the 26th to the 30h November 1991, the EMI CD claims to be solely from 29th of the same month. So, possibly the same but with some crafty video edits on the Sony. At least the audio on the DVD os LPCM, rather than lossy Dolby Digital or DTS. The picture, however, is not exactly high definition, and is in 4:3 format.

My favourite AB symphony, in a great performance (I've forgotten who it was - someone like William Mival but not him, surely? - who was rude about it on the-then CD Review - pistols at dawn stuff).

Well, it was their debut recording, I think, back in the mid-1990s. They certainly sound happy enough, which is what matters. HIPP, of course.

Currently listening to some Monteux recordings. All from the big 14CD RCA box from the 1990s

R-K: Antar with the SFSO from 1946
Debussy:La Mer BSO from 1954 - beautifully clear recording and lovely performance
                        Debussy:Images SFSO from 1951

Will go on to Nocturnes from 1955 whic is in stereo but strangely not in the complete RCA stereo recordings which I recently bought to fill some gaps but with some inevitable duplications. I’ve got to say that if I were listing my top conductors Pierre would be right up there!

                        Nocturnes also excellent!

Frank Bridge piano works, including capriccios 1 and 2, and the Sonata.
                            Kathryn Stott.

Not works I know, but enjoying them very much so far.

                              CPE Bach
                              Symphonies Wq 183 1-4.

Kammerorchester "CPE Bach"/Hartmut Haenchen. Phoenix CDs.
                              and...
Solamente Naturali/Miloš Valent/Didier Talpain. Brilliant Classics. Qobuz Studio.

Despite the modern instruments, I've always warmed to HH and his band. They serve CPE devotedly well.
But delighted to discover the Bratislavan Naturali (searching around tonight...!) as there aren't many complete Wq 183s on period instruments, and I find Manze and Leonhard dull, stiff and uninspiring.
The Solamente really bring out the warmth and the fun of this wonderful music (which I often begin, and end, my day with).
And I just found a 2ndhand CD for under a fiver delivered!

Nielsen Symphony No.5. Odense SO/Serov. KONTRAPUNKT CD.
Remarkable, unusual 5th, way off-the-beaten, but showing in its bigboned fullness, subtlety and warmth, how much more to this music there is than the usually played-out extremes. (Not that drums or brass hold back - anything but!!) More on the Nielsen thread soon I hope.

Good to know. Actually I didn't know Pinnock had recorded these either, but yes the Leonhardt is a bit dull.
