The new Cecilia Bartoli Vivaldi album. To be really honest, I'm not much of a fan of the human voice but I absolutely adore Cecilia's singing. This is wonderful music making, imvho!

          Hindemith: Piano Concerto
          Idil Biret/Yale Symphony Orchestra/Shimada
          Naxos

Some Hindemith I like a lot; other works leave me a bit cold.
I'm on the cold side with this, but it's the first hearing, so I might get to like/appreciate it more next time.

You know The Four Temperaments? More attractive "piano concerto" than the concerto itself, and on a really lovely album....

The Cello Concerto's gorgeous slow movement was of course the source for the Walton Hindemith Variations....

                Beethoven
Kreutzer Sonata (2nd movement), Efrem Zimbalist (violin) and Harold Bauer

I came across the name Zimbalist a few days ago in connection with another musician. I thought it rang bells. However, I wasn't aware of a Zimbalist musician, and as the name seems quite unusual I looked it up. It became clear that the Zimbalist I was aware of was in 77 Sunset Strip, and Zimbalist the violinist was his father. It seems he was considered to be at the top of his profession in the first half of the 20th Century. His wife Alma founded the Curtis Institute, and he became its director.

I'm not a violinist, but I gather some are approving of his style and technique, and also that in the video both players play without music.

Lovely live rendition from Nicholas Mulroy of Schubert's inspired creation, Die Gebüsche, on In Tune just now. Also, a good evening concert coming up. We heard it at Wigmore on Saturday.

Yes, jane; they are amongst the pieces I like.
I have that Chandos Four Temperaments/Cello concerto coupling (BBCPO/Tortelier), and also a Budapest recording of the Cello concerto.

                            Tchaikovsky. Symphony no.1. 'Winter Daydreams'.

Zubin Mehta conducting the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.

I picked up Mehta's set plus the usual extras for £3.15 on eBay. Free p&p.
