"Very inexpensive" is right: so much so that the 5 disc set costs a little over half the price I paid for the EMI References 2-disc set of the "late" Sonatas a quarter of a century ago. I think you've prompted me into a little "New Year's Day" present, pasto!

Believe me, Ferney, it's a tenner well spent!

Deepest apologies! Very grateful to you, too, for the recommendation (and, as I've just been listening to the Vivaldi disc, for your espousal of the Andrew Manze 'Art of the Violin' Harmonia Mundi bargain box - great stuff).

Anytime. Glad you are enjoying that Vivaldi.

        Wagner Tristan und Isolde.
Placido Domingo, Nina Stemme, Mihoko Fujimura, Olaf Bär René Pape,
The Royal Opera Chorus & Orchestra, Covent Garden,
        Sir Antonio Pappano.

I see that people do not play much opera, or if they do, they do not post. Unless there's a separate thread I have missed?

The edition used for the Glagolitic Mass is that which Jiří Bělohlávek conducted at the First Night of the Proms 2011, but this time without the dreadful dynamic limitation imposed for the broadcast and iPlayer offerings, and with the Czech Philharmonic et al, rather than the BBCSO . . .

I’ll have to give that one a listen.

Beefy, I heard the Janacek/Behlohlavek on Radio 3, well the extracts, it sounded quite lacklustre, imo.

After a most excellent Hear & Now, I am listening to:

Goffredo Petrassi - Ottavo Concerto, 1970-72 (Concerto For Orchestra No. 8)
Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra - Arturo Tamayo

Where would we be without Arturo Tamayo, Pioneer conductor of so much deserving non-mainstream repertoire?

I have owned this set for quite a few years, but I'm still to make my mind up as to which concerto is my favourite.

Classic set, yes... did you ever hear the BBCSO/Milan RAI/Hungarica/Zoltán Peskó set?.... on Warner Fonit, less perfectly played or recorded, a bit uneven but the best of it (1-4, 7-8) has an earthier, grittier intensity that is about the only thing that lovely Tamayo one lacks...
The Milan 5 and 6 are rather studio-bound, slightly dry; still an indispensable set though.

My favourite Petrassi away from the Great 8 are the Flute and Piano Concertos both on Naxos and Stradivarius... Strad best for the piano, honours even for the Flute... and Naxos also did the amazing Coro di Morti...

No, I've never heard the Milan RAI/Peskó set and I don't think I'll search it out because I think that it will still be quite a few years before I properly get my ears around the Nederlands RSO/Tamayo set.

I also have the Naxos CD of the flute and piano concertos, wouldn't be without it!

                              Just stumbled across this....
Listen to unlimited or download Petrassi: Coro di morti, Noche oscura & Psalm IX (Live) by Coro polifonico di Milano in Hi-Res quality on Qobuz. Subscription from £10.83/month.

The Chandos disc with the Salmo IX is fine in itself (c/w the Magnificat, one of two Noseda Petrassi releases), but the couplings look more compelling on the new one... the choral idiom is similar to Stravinsky's late sacred works, or you may think of Oedipus Rex...and Les Noces.

I find the Petrassi "a better listen" though...that Italian passion and intensity about it. Coro di Morti is a masterpiece.
                              Seek it out on Qobuz.
