Verity Sharp presents the BBC NOW in Sibelius, Langgaard, Korngold, Zemlinsky and Brahms.

Found sitting on a hard drive. Interestingly assembled programme, mainly from the 'romantic' tradition.

        Bernstein: Symphony 1, Jeremiah
        Nan Merriman/Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra/Bernstein
        Mono, recorded February 1945

The second movement may be a bit tentative, but, once it gets going, has all the swing that was missing in tonight's Prom's performance.

Just finished listening to the sixth (final) CD in Michael Gielen Edition 5 (Bartok/Stravinsky).
I'm not sure that I'm quite as taken with the performances as Richard B seems to have been, but each piece brought out something I hadn't heard/noticed before, and it is a thoroughly enjoyable set, so thanks for the recommendation.
I particularly enjoyed Canticum Sacrum (apart from the organ: the one in Stravinsky's own recording is similarly dire, though, so perhaps that's what he wanted!), Agon, Requiem Canticles, and Variations (all on CD5).
A bit of a shame that Pulcinella is a live recording, as maybe the odd glitch would have otherwise been 'corrected' in a subsequent studio take.

After last week's Portsmouth Point, It was Walton-night!
I’d forgotten how much I adore the Violin Concerto, and for all the many merits of Little, Kennedy et al, Francescatti is hard to get past. 5-Star Classic of the Gramophone.

It was the Kennedy recording that got me through my father's death.

The Walton violin concerto is probably my favourite 20th century violin concerto. My recommended accounts are:

                1) Menuhin / The Composer (the account with which I got to know the work)
                2) Haendel / Berglund (I saw Haendel perform the work at Free Trade Hall)
                3) Kennedy / Previn

The Mahler up again, Stan. Must be good! Haven’t got round to listening to it yet. The other recording looks interesting.

Listening now or catching up with the ASMF Prom with Joshua Bell.

The 'Das Lied von der Erde' sung by Magdalena Kožená & Stuart Skelton is very much to my taste. There is a free video on demand of the whole concert starting with Schumann Symphony No 3 'Rhenish' on the BR website with 'Das Lied von der Erde' starting at point 32.00.

I did also see the video on YouTube but it may not be there now.

Their studio Drumming was very fine but this has all the presence of the live performance it was. On this disc, Drumming is preceded by the performance of Clapping Music involving the composer.

Sibelius Symphony No.5 (original 1915 version). Lahti SO/Vanska. BIS CD 1995.

Very instructive, indeed crucial, to appreciate that transition...that ending...
Hearing it last night, I couldn't help feeling - how did he ever think this was finished..? (There was even an "intermediate version" performed in 12/1916...!)
But if it was all that had come down to us....? Ah, if....

Check out the Original 1903/4 Sibelius Violin Concerto too...(BIS CD-500) perhaps less revelatory but still well worth your listening time...
