Whatever his somewhat dubious political leanings, the most remarkable (and not a little filmic/rockist) of the Icelandic composers:

            Jon Leifs - Hekla - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AQ24wuylqI

Naturally, YouTube rolls it to what those of us who don't enjoy Bax in depth recognise a bit predictably as a masterpiece - for Rob:

            Arnold Bax - Tintagel - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixF5f2cqIKo

The Kenneth Leighton work is something else!
Hi bbm - While Steve Hough is keen on contemporary marketing - ie "The French Album" which isn't quite French - I really rate him : he is definitely "substance" imho.

If you want more Leighton - - there is a CD out there where he is offset by Ruth Gipps. I crowdfund for her - but only in my head as I don't believe in crowdfunding.

            Stephen Hough - Moscow Nights - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHYon-cTMcQ

While Leifs was investigated, and indeed held in prison, regarding possible collaboration with the Nazis, it should be born in mind that he got his first (Jewish) wife Annie out of Germany to Sweden regardless of the fact that the marriage was falling apart. They divorced in Sweden. Irracible he cedrtainly was, and very interested in rescuing and promoting Iceland's Nordic cultural past. I think a Scottish verdict applies regarding his political leanings. Very much looking forward to the forthcoming release of the BIS recording of Edda II.

Well, that is very educational and helpful Bryn.

                He is a fantastic composer.

I hope that he will with the new release - and previously released - material be repackaged with a different typeface.

Ludicrous as it will sound, I have a similar issue with the typeface of the Dropkick Murphys.

It is often misleading and plays to ideas of, erm, robustness - the truths are usually more complex.

Renée Fleming's The Beautiful Voice, her 1999 Grammy Award-winning disc. If this were food, it would be very bad for your teeth (well, she has, like Dame Nellie Melba, had a dessert named for her, in her case it's a chocolate-covered number ). I sought it out for £1 on Amazon as it includes the rendition of The Last Rose of Summer from the soundtrack of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri with Osian Ellis on harp. Gorgeous singing, though like the dessert a mistake to down it in one sitting (also includes Marietta's song from Die tote stadt which is a regular on R3).

I was at the German premiere of 'Scheherazade point two' at Berlin with John Adams conducting. A most atmospheric work that I enjoyed but it seemed to go on a touch too long for me.
