Been struggling with a blocked ear for the past fortnight which made listening to music a bit difficult (and often impossible) but matters have suddenly improved - thank goodness!

                Tell me about it.

I normally have to get my ears syringed every four or five months... what normally happens is that, four or five months after getting them syringed, they'll start blocking then unblocking themselves, before ultimately, becoming very blocked, like they are now. No texturally subtle music for me.

Not good. I'm guessing that a head cold I got caused the damage and thankfully it seems to have drained away during the course of the day. Assuming your problem is excess wax and if your GP surgery has a micro-suction tool this is much safer than constant syringing which may cause eardrum damage. I've had this done and it's brilliant. Blocked ears make music sound so bad I try to steer clear for the duration if possible.

Yes - last time I had them syringed the nurse told me that next time I'll have to have the ear wax sucked out - though this will mean going to the local hospital rather than surgery.

For me, it doesn't exactly make music sound bad, it just limits my hearing (and also puts me in a bad mood).

Know how this is, as I suffer with this as well!

                          I haven't heard Lorin Maazel's Mahler recordings. I expect it's self recommending?

This ‘Das Lied von der Erde’ from Maazel is very good and recorded in a superb acoustic too!
