Mum being somewhat bed- or bedroom-bound just now, she always has Classic FM (actually on FM, thankfully, compression notwithstanding) tinkling away in the background, turning it up as and when. On Saturday I realised I was listening to Cowan's Classics, as meticulously presented as you'd expect. He played the scherzo from the Mendelssohn 3rd but, missing who it was, I thought "well that's outstanding".... it was of course my latest Haydneer Hero Thomas Fey, from this very box.... would be one for the shortlist at least, but I already have his 2 and 5... he also included Haitink's latest B6, so I've finally downloaded that now.... later tonight, perhaps.

            WINTER DAWN TREAT...
            BRUCKNER
            Symphony No.6
Vienna Symphony Orchestra/Volkmar Andreae. Music & Arts CD 2009, rec. 1953.

Stunned as ever by this performance, at 50'49 probably the most volatile and physically exciting on record. That perfectly idiomatic 1950s Vienna sound, so right for Bruckner, offsetting a marvellously expressive rubato, is a major feature in the unique successes of this recording. Never mind top 5, it's top 3! The way Andreae rollercoasters through the finale development makes you think "this is Bruckner's Symphonie Fantastique!"

Mahler: Symphony No 5 in C sharp minor

              Gürzenich Orchestra, Cologne/François-Xavier Roth

My initial enthusiasm for this recording when I downloaded it a couple of months ago has in no way diminished. Like Kubelik or Haitink, he lets the music unfold and speak for itself without feeling the need to "intervene". It was good to hear Stephen Johnson being enthusiastic about the performance last Saturday.

Putting aside worries about the audio quality, just to mention that this and lots of others are available on youtube.

Might settle down to that B6 tonight anyway.

I think I'd need an ambulance after a programme like that! Hope you had a decent interval.

Incidentally, wasn't the 7th recorded with the (then) Leningrad Philharmonic? I saw them with Jansons perform this in Birmingham in 1993 - a terrific performance! This was the occasion when the horn contingent of the orchestra joined me at my table in the café before the concert. Their English was about on par with my Russian but we communicated somehow!

Hiya Pet! I had a gap. It was a wild wet and windy day down here and I thought oh yes! It was rather stimulating for me, actually! I wrote quite a lot of music of that! I have the box set of Maris Jansons's Shostakovich's cycle. With the orchestra in question, yes, it was called St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra(Leningrad). It was recorded 22-23-IV-1988.
