Thanks! Any opinion on the performances which I believe were live?

I'm enjoying it very much. (Last movement now as I type.) I prefer this to the Belcea Quartet, but I did enjoy the Brooklyn Rider's quite a lot. Can't remember what I thought about the Fine Arts Quartet.

I always smile when I pull this set out since the liner notes say that the Hagen Quartet played these works over successive evenings at the Edinburgh Festival. However, I was there and the concerts were in the morning! (I remember going backstage and the wonderful Veronika Hagen threw her arms around me having mistaken me for someone else! She was very apologetic but I managed to forgive her! )

              Great anecdote.

My choice today was Shostakovitch' 4th symphony: the Philadelphia Orchestra and Myun-wun Chung. Well played but , hmm..., is anyone a Chung fan? He seems to be quite good in Messiaen, but althought he's undoubtedly an accomplished conductor I've never been impressed by his performances.

I have to admit, I am not that impressed with his Messiaen either. Good but no Cambreling or Nagano.

I fondly recall the original recording of that work on Brian Eno's Obscure label: https://www.discogs.com/release/4098...nsemble-Pieces

Debussy: Chansons de Bilitis, Twelve Poems after Pierre Louys (Vera Zorina, Columbia Chamber Ensemble, Robert Craft)

from Qobuz, who quite wrongly identify the Debussy work as the Trois Chansons de Bilitis, which it is not. Slapped wrist for the France-based service.

I originally got this recording on LP in a W H Smith sale, back in the early 1970s. It uses the Boulez reconstruction of the celesta part and was the first recording of the work. This new 192/24 high-definition remastering is a great improvement.

Have to admit this is the first I've heard of Hérodiade (1944) - Hindemith did compose rather a lot, admittedly!

The Milhaud piano concerts from the Brilliant French Piano Concertos box mentioned elsewhere.

There is a later recording of Herodiade on the CPO label. It has two performances, one with and one without recitation.
