I heard that Decca Karajan Planets shortly after its first release on LP. It caused a stir at the time as few non-British orchestras had recorded the work, though a Viennese orchestra had quite recently, the State Opera orchestra under Sir Adrian Boult on Westminster. I've often wondered if Karajan used a tenor Wagner tuba in place of the Euphonium usually used here. Holst merely says 'tenor tuba' which could mean either.

Herbert's interpretation was more controversial. I remember one BBC critic, maybe on 'Building a Library' saying that Mars sounded less like the bringer of war and more like the bringer of no good to young ladies in dark alleys. Herbert of course made a later versionon DG with his Berliners.

Thanks, cloughie. I think an interesting paper could be written on the Reader's Digest involvement in recording, e.g. the Earl Wild/Horenstein Rachmaninov concertos , and there was even a Sargent Messiah , in stereo , some years after his mono Columbia recording.

The Charity Shop circuit seems to have a large number of RDCDs - many still in their sealed boxes - probably bought on subscription but never troubled by their owners whose relatives have subsequently had the disposal job. Many are of shorter mixed pieces but there are some little gems amongst them, Charles Gerhardt seems to come up with some of the best!

And now... Triadic Memories with Marilyn Nonken. I hadn't heard many of these Mode discs of Feldman before. The Trio is excellent; also I like the close piano recording in TM. I wish however that Mode hadn't seen fit to have the cover of every release in this series feature the unprepossessing visage of the composer, to remind me of what an unpleasant character he was.

The New Music show from 5 November, since it features some Fausto Romitelli and a number by my former composition teacher...
There is another piece by my former composition teacher (Andrew Lewis) that I've just tuned into R3 for, since it's about to be broadcast...

You're welcome. Hopefully you'll enjoy it more than I did! (Not my cup of tea, though there are pieces of his I've listened to and enjoyed).

Listening to Raoul Koczalski play the Chopin preludes. I don’t think any pianists play Chopin’s preludes like this today - with such lightness and freshness.
