Brahms. Piano Concerto No.1 in d minor.

John Ogdon, piano. The American Symphony Orchestra conducted by Leopold Stokowski.

An October 1969 live performance from New York.

The disc also includes rehearsals from all three movements.

The sound quality isn’t that wonderful but it’s the great John Ogdon at his absolute best. Has anyone else heard this disc? I picked it up from my local Oxfam shop this afternoon.

This evening a break from Scriabin, and picking up where I left off in my journey through the Boulez DG box:

I've just finished re-hearing that Messiaen set. 'la Transfiguration' is still my favourite. I enjoyed 'echoes sur au-dela' but didn't care for the 'concerto a quatre'.

Not the same box, surely? Are not the La Transfiguration . . . discs (with Myung -Whun Chung at the helm) from the DG Messiaen (not quite*) Complete Edition, rather than the Boulez box that JK refers to? The disc JK mentioned can be found in both boxes. I, too, like Éclairs . . . .

                  * I have added a CD-R compilation, of works discovered or realised since its release, to the DG Complete Messiaen box.

Perhaps smittims means the Cambreling box I mentioned several pages back in #18335?

With a recording of La Transfiguration . . . that I prefer to the Chung. The Cambreling box does not have the Concert a quatre, by the way.

Sorry for any confusion. The Messiaen set I was thinking of was the DG collector 10 disc box conducted by Boulez and Chung. It contains the Boulez disc illustrated above.

Another interesting Messiaen set, containing older recordings, was on Decca, and included the old Dorati recording of La Transfiguration, the three song cycles with piano, in Argo recordings , and a barnstorming Visions de l'Amen by the Ogdons.

Yuki Matsuzawa playing the Chopin etude op 25/7. I've fallen in love, I am a Matsuzawa op 27/7 addict, I can die happy. It's so elegant. So intelligent. That Chopopopin rag!
