Dave Smith - 9th Piano Concert (5.1 surround sound derived from a 96/24 ambisonic recording made from a RØDE NT-SF1 Soundfield mike cluster last night at Schott Music, London).

1 - On the Virtues of Flowers

2 - On the Virtues of Forests

          3. On the Virtues of Wild Birds.

(Dave Smith - Steinway baby grand)

It's a work I know quite well, having attended and recorded previous performances of it given by its composer. This was probably the best I have heard it played. An earlier, studio recording( not by me) of "On the Virtues of Flowers" can be heard here: https://soundcloud.com/dave_smith-co...ues-of-flowers

Ah, I’d very much like to hear that - not least because Virtues of the Forests and Wild Birds haven’t been commercially recorded.

I'll see what Dave Smith has to say about making them available. I sent them to him via WeTransfer, yesterday. The total playing time comes in at just under 80 minutes, so slimmed down to CD rate, they would fit on a single CD-R. i also used a little Zoom Q2n to video most of the event, but in the last-minute rush to set up, angled the Q2n just before Dave took to the piano stool. Unfortunately, though his hands and feet are, most of his head isn't in shot.

Thanks. Was it a public concert? It must have been hot!

Schott Music's recital room is quite small and has recently got smaller, due to the installation of new cupboards along one side wall, though the old shelving has also been removed from both sides. It is in their basement, so was not too hot. Quite a pleasant temperature, indeed. The concert was rather sparsely attended, probably due to the weather (and transport disruption due the next day) plus the Proms. However, those attending were very much enthused by the performance.

This disk starts with concerto no. 2. Honestly, I can't remember enjoying this piece as much as I am now. Wonderful.

I've not heard it but the combination has worked well in the past.

You must be excited by the new Norrington Martinu release, Nethersage.

                          I am too.

Due to play here after the current BBC FOUR Proms broadcast. Not recalling ever heard him conducting Martinu, I will reserve judgement. The field is reasonably rich already.

By all means make it available to whoever. I seem to recollect that Mandryka was an interested party years ago, so hi!
