It seems OK and very much in the same spirit as things by Lachenmann.

              John Williams. Violin Concerto.

              Anne-Sophie Mutter, violin.

The composer conducting the Boston Symphony Orchestra. (DG)

I’ve tried to resist buying this but since I’m a big Anne-Sophie Mutter fan I suppose it was inevitable. Listened to it twice now and I’m afraid it just doesn’t speak to me. It’s just not… memorable. Bit of a mush mash of styles. The playing is as fabulous as you would expect but it’s just not doing it.

                Beethoven. The Symphonies.

The Chamber Orchestra of Europe conducted by Yannick Nézet-Seguin. Deutsche Grammophon.

A bit grand to say I’m listening to them all however this is the first opportunity I’ve had to listen to ‘properly’ as opposed to using the PRESTO app on my ‘phone whilst I do paperwork at work! I dread to think how many sets I must have of these monumental works but, as always, my justification is do I hear new details I’ve not noticed before? And the answer is Yes! Even half listening to the ‘phone has made me think ‘Oh, I’ve not noticed THAT before’.

We’re going to hear Nézet-Séguin’ conduct the Ninth with the Philadelphia Orchestra soon so it’ll be interesting to hear how his interpretation develops. Fantastic recording too.

I once heard a version of that for bassoon which was particularly sensual and thrilling.

Mendelssohn, Lobgesang Symphony, Y NS and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. I never had much appreciation for this work prior, having obtained a few versions as part of complete editions, by YNS makes me a believer (pun unintentional). It is pretty frankly Operatic, and the others in my collection seem to treat it as a Church Devotional, but I think that the no holds barred approach works here. I can’t wait for my next opportunity to spin it

I agree with you ” no holds barred”. I got the recording, having listened on streaming, not long after taking part in a ( similarly committed) performance. I've listened to it a number of times since with pleasure. In fact, I think I'll listen again in the next day or two.

                                Lamentations

The latest (somewhat unseasonal) BBC MM CD.

As mentioned by jonfan elsewhere (Royal Music Prom):

On the latest BBC Music Mag cd is superb choral singing of ‘Lamentations’, Tudor to the present day, conducted by Peter Philips. It’s worthy to compare with specialist choral groups such as the Sixteen or Tenebrae.
                                Tallis: Lamentations I and II
                                Dominique Phinot: Lamentations
                                Nico Muhly: Recordare domine
                                Brumel: Heth. Cogitavit Dominus
                                White: Lamentations a 5
Matthew Martin: The Lamentations of Jeremiah

Peter Phillips, directing, has certainly tamed the BBC Singers.

Dominique Phinot was a name that was new to me.
I've recommended the CD to our choir music director as it's the sort of programme he likes to plan.
