          HAYDN F J

          S No 45 in F# min Sturm und drang “Abscheid” H I/45

          Comparing

          ASMV – Brown I
          Stuttgarter Kammerorchester – Davies D R
          Philharmonia Hungarica – Dorati A
          Schlierbacher Kammerorchester – Fey T
          Radio S O of Zagreb – Janigro A

PS. Listening to the "Life & Works" 4CDs with Jeremy Siepmann, he says that, as far as he knows, this is the only symphony ever written in this key. Don’t know why, but if so, I find that surprising.

I don't know this particular work, but I'm glad someone else here likes Reger's music. He trod the ground that Brahms tacitly acknowledged in his own work but rarely trod himself, while pointing the way forward for Schoenberg and the Second Viennese school.

He didn't spent much time doing a search then!
Admittedly not many, but more than just Haydn 45:

I've got recordings of the Glazunov and Myaskovsky, so must dig them out.

It certainly would have been at the time when he wrote it, and well into the following century too, the reason being that F# minor is an extremely awkward key for 18th century woodwind instruments, and impossible for 18th century brass instruments - Haydn had to order extra tubing for the horns in order to transpose them down by a semitone.

At least with streaming you can listen to just the bits you want to hear, without having paid full price for the CD and only playing a bit before hitting Eject (or for a concert ticket and leaving at the interval).

The Times review does mention the somewhat unusual choices of coupling!
