Now there's an underrated pianist IMO

I have a few of her records including a marvellous album of York Bowen's 24 preludes Op 102 and other pieces

        Absolutely!

I broke one of my rules a week ago and bought a pristine vinyl in a charity shop of her playing the Rachmaninov ‘Paganini Rhapsody’ despite having no means to play it. (I have it on cd anyway).

I heard her playing it with the (R)SNO in 1978 when she played it at their Summer Proms concert. I’d never heard the piece before and fell in love with both the work and Ms. Ortiz! As a 15 year old, this was heady stuff.

The following day I went to buy a recording and found hers only to find it was a full price EMI Lp and so way beyond my school boy budget. (There was a gorgeous photo of her on the cover!) I had to settle for Malcom Binns on CfP but always lusted after Ms. Ortiz’s recording but, alas, never got it. Well, until a week ago…

As well as the Shostakovich (in a 2CD set), I have the Previn version of Lambert's Rio Grande, in which she is the piano soloist.

Odd how some of us do that!

I have a few LPs which I bought in charity shops - some possibly very good - but never played. I found several Lyrita LPs in one shop, and have been curious about those for a while, as I understand that Lyrita produced some interesting material. Some others I have on CD anyway. I do - in theory - have ways of playing them - but it would mean getting the playing equipment which is lurking in various storage cupboards etc. around the house out, and making sure it all works. I thought that when I retired that might be a fun thing to do - but despite having several possible turntables to refurbish I've just not got round to it yet. I am well retired now!

Nights in the Gardens of Spain
                (Artur Rubenstein, piano
                San Francisco Symphony,
                Enrique Jorda.

A modern masterpiece, beautifully played (even if the guitar and harp are a bit recessed in the recording).

Someone, in a Facebook group, I belong to, recommended Bernstein’s cycle of Brahms’s symphonies. I’ve never heard this set before!

Minimal, simple, spacious, Renaud Gagneux is clearly influenced by Satie, and what he does here is a pleasure for me to hear.
