Most of these received their first hearing and are in really excellent mono sound, often preferable to the later stereo remakes with the Columbia SO which are also in the box. The Schubert 9, recorded in 1946, which i played last night is absolutely superb, a terrific performance.

I've still nowhere near played the contents of the DG 1960s Karajan box (never mind the other three), issued in 2012, the first of the big boxes I bought, yet still I buy more! The forthcoming Mitropolous box from Sony looks very tempting!
I’ve also been playing through that set, mainly the Brahms. I agree that the stereo set of Symphonies aren’t quite as satisfying as the earlier sets, both the one in the box and the Pristine Audio set with the NBC Symphony, but on its own terms I am still finding the stereo set to be hugely enjoyable

A thrilling piece, I think, and quite a place to hear it from!

I treated myself to Schubert's D887 Quartet from the Diogenes. Top performance and sound.

                        Vaughan Williams. Symphony No.8

The Hallé under Sir Mark Elder.

My parents had a 45rpm record of the ‘big tune big’ from the 6th symphony that was used as a theme tune from a programme called ‘Family at War’. The ‘B’ side was the Toccata from the 8th symphony which, as a youngster, I found very exotic and little bit disturbing! (These were from the LSO/Previn on RCA).

My other memory of the 8th symphony was hearing the (R)SNO play it under Neemi Jarvi in the 1980’s. I remember the leader’s solo being one of the most beautiful pieces of violin playing I’ve ever heard. ( The great Edwin Paling).

Interesting - interesting that Jarvi conducted it - did he do much RVW with the orchestra? Wasn’t Bryden around the SNO around that time and his RVW recordings on Chandos are up there with the best!

The whole set for from £4.51 depending on the quality of download you seek is indeed a bargain - now do I need it?

Bartók: The Miraculous Mandarin, Sz.73 (Complete Ballet)/Stravinsky: Petrushka (1947 version)

Vienna State Opera Chorus, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Christoph von Dohnányi (Decca Japan MQA UHQCD)

Whether it's the MQA-isation (played back via an MQA-enabled Gold Note DAC) or simply the quality of the original recordings, these performances sound stunning, especially the Bartók. I'm not sure that I've ever been as conscious of the organ in a recorded performance. Anyway, up there with his Varèse 'Amériques'.
