Bach's Epiphany Cantata No 65 Sie werden aus Saba alle kommen. A great Sunday morning experience - joyful and vibrant sounding with natural horns, recorders, oboes da caccia.

        I played two versions:
        Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Concentus Musicus Wien
        Leusink, Netherlands Bach Collegium

Beethoven: Symphony No. 6 in F major 'Pastoral' (Le Concert des Nations, Jordi Savall). The SACDs were delivered a couple of minutes ago.

Savall's Beethoven 7, 8 and 9 will have to wait. I need to go to Aldi (a trip which will take around 2 hours, all in).

Grieg Piano Concerto - 1961 Last Night of the Proms - Gina Bachauer /BBCSO/Cameron.

Rather lovely not bad sound and GB rather more indulgent in the slow movement than in her studio recording with George Weldon .

Evidently, not a new thing - loud applause after first movement with sotto voce tutting.

                      Beethoven. Symphonies 5 & 7.

The Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Wilhelm Furtwängler. (Recorded 1950 & 1954).

A bit of an epiphany for me. I never really worshipped the great man but these recordings make me realise what makes him so special.

I listened to those last week from the new Warner box, The Complete Recordings of Wilhelm Furtwängler. They come up very fresh in the new remastering and I very much enjoyed them.

Coincidentally, Mrs. PG is giving me that set for my birthday!

The box itself is awkward to get into and there is no index of works in the accompanying booklet, proving once again that the marketing/production side has let down the fantastic work of the musicians, engineers and remastering team, but don't let this put you off, there is real treasure in the box and you won't be disappointed.

Warner seem to think this is not needed in their boxes - the Ravel box last year suffered in this way too!
