I can heap far too much praise on the Bychkov/Tchaikopvsky Manfred. One of the best recordings.

Tchaikovsky Symphony No.6 in B minor, Op.74, "Pathetique".
    Czech PO, Semyon Bychkov.

    Mahler Symphony No.5.
    Bavarian RSO, Mariss Jansons.

I'm thinking of buying Mrs. PG this for Christmas since she loves the Romeo and Juliet Overture. She has connections with the Czech Philharmonic as well.

            Schoenberg's Piano Concerto.

Alfred Brendel, piano. Michael Gielen conducting the SWF Symphony Orchestra of Baden-Baden.

I found this in a charity shop for £2 yesterday so I didn't hesitate. It's quite a short work so I intend to keep listening to it until it starts to make come sense.

              Shostakovich: String Quartets

              The Emerson Quartet

A particularly good charity shop acquisition, £1.99 for the whole cycle!

A very fine find indeed, and you get the two chamber symphonies thrown in.

Wow! Fantastic! The same shop I got the Schoenberg in had the Emerson's Bartok cycle for a fiver as well as Ashkenaz's complete Chopin for a tenner but I have both sets so I passed.

                  Great bargains to be had.

I realised I have Pollini doing it with Abbado so it'll be interesting to do a side by side comparison. I must see if the library have a score of it.

There's also a recording with the BBCSO and Bruno Maderna, and another with Kubelik.

Thanks, Bryn. I'll check those out.

I did get the Colin Davis Neilson symphony set with the LSO for a fiver so I think I'll give those a spin this afternoon.

Messiaen: Chronochromie (BBCSO, Andrew Davis) from the 1999 Radio 3 Messiaen weekend.

The image of Olivier Messiaen with his beret set at a jaunty angle, meticulously notating the songs of the birds around him, has become an icon of the most celebrated French composer of the second half of the 20th century. Messiaen is one of the great pioneers of music in our time, whose whole approach to musical structure and time has been an immense influence on subsequent generations of composers. But he made birdsong utterly his own territory: other composers from the baroque onwards introduced birds into their music in a more or less stylised way, but until Messiaen no one had used them so extensively or systematically.

Less of a bargain but a good Sunday afternoon listen

Tchaikovsky: Concert Fantasy and Piano Concerto No 1

                              Peter Donohoe
                              Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra
                              Rudolf Barshai

A nice bloom to the sound. Part of the Harvey's of Bristol International Series.

A closely shaven Peter Donohoe on the cover, an unlikely candidate for big label makeover.
