Rachmaninov. Piano concerto no. 3 in d minor

played by the powerhouse that is Yuja Wang with Gustavo Dudamel conducting the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela.

    Pretty impressive, imho.

Bit of a shaky start but the contributions from Osborne and Millar seem very fine, so far (a little way into the second movement). My earlier comment re. the wind section seem sadly to be being confirmed. Oh dear, this band was not too tight last night.

[Things do seem to improve as the performance progresses. Let's hope the orchestra is more together and the wind section sounds a bit more committed for the Leeds gig.]
My thoughts entirely. I did think that the conductor doesn't know what his orchestra can do. If I said anything else, elsewhere, I be routed!

          Camille Saint-Saëns
          Piano Concerto in g minor.

          Cécile Ousset, piano

CBSO conducted by Sir Simon Rattle.

I heard Mademoiselle Ousset play the Rachmaninov 'Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini' with the SNO in 1978 and immediately fell in love with both the piece and her! (Well, I was 15!) She seems to have fallen off the radar recently although I understand she's still playing.

Actually, I realised I'm talking rubbish! (No surprises there then!)

It was Christina Ortiz I heard playing the Rachmaninov in 1978. I did fall in love with her too as indeed I had with Martha Argerich the year before. A pattern seems to be emerging here...

              Brahms: Symphonies

              Philharmonia/ Klemperer

Re-visiting this after many years. Interesting how I thought I'd moved on to a leaner, cleaner style with these works and wouldn't enjoy Otto's way, but boy did that first wow factor come back in spades !

I feel exactly the same. I too, hadn't played these for a while (a good few years) then about 3 months ago gave 'em a spin. Yep - that wow factor came storming back!

Of Brahms complete symphonies, this would be my desert island choice.

                    ..
Indeed. In the 80s she was definitely on EMI's roster of go to artists for popular repertoire.

I must dig out my old copies of her virtuosic recording of the Debussy Preludes and the Grieg/Mendelssohn Concertos with the ASMF/Marriner (IIRC). Sadly both on tape. May need to investigate the options of transferring these to a FLAC file. Seem to remember a machine for this purpose being recommended on a thread so maybe time to get the credit card out...

                      Englund: Piano concerto 1

Caught on YLE Klassinen (thanks, Draco!) yesterday afternoon, and thought it sounded vaguely familiar.
Realised that I had it (different performance) on a Naxos CD, so (re)listening a bit more attentively this morning.

                            Hiya maestro,

Best places to start. I admire the 4 symphonies under Plasson on EMI:

Also the complete chamber music on Timpani:

                                Stravinsky: Violin concerto

On YLE, but soon to be available in Casa Pulcinella, as it's in the Salonen Stravinsky box just ordered.
I can understand why the Penguin Guide gave it four stars!
