    Royal Music

I gather HM the Queen is celebrating an anniversary of long rule. Although not a royalist, I was intrigued to come across (amongst our disordered piles) the 1953 Novello publication of the music to be performed at the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. It includes the entire order of service, including the spoken parts, in a volume the size of a minor oratorio. It can't be that rare, as I see copies on Amazon for about £4.

Coronation Review Of Ex-Service Men and Women by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II Hyde Park 5th July 1953 and a great selection of related books, art and collectibles available now at AbeBooks.co.uk.

As well as the well-known items, there are anthems by Dyson, Healy Willan [he of last week's CE fame], Harris and Bullock. One wonders if future occasions will be graced by such a publication, and whether it will be bought in great numbers?

Alas, music for 'future occasions' will no doubt be dominated by music of a 'popular genre'...

Parry's I was Glad, especially when the choir shouts out Vivat Vivat Regina. Makes the back of my hair curl up! Medieval coronations must've been rather interesting I should think.

Indeed. An uncle used to give me half a crown for Christmas around that time. Just a half of one.

I rather think his missus (my bat-like Aunt Mary) crowned him with many crowns, BBM!
