I echo the above comments. I did actually meet him by chance at a party in Golders Green the 70s. Afterwards he kindly gave me a lift back into town - to this day he remains the only famous musician to have acted as my chauffeur.

I've just played Schubert's "Der Hirt auf dem Felsen" in combination with Christa Ludwig and Geoffrey Parsons.

I will dig out and listen to his recording of Stravinsky's Ebony Concerto with the Johnny Dankworth Band (Dudley Moore as the pianist).

One of the very first classical LPs I ever bought in about 1971, was his recording of Mozart's clarinet concerto, with Anthony Collins conducting the London Symphony Orchestra. I couldn't stop playing it on my parents' Ferguson radiogram and near enough wore it out - but I still have it! (Decca 'Eclipse') A wonderful recording which ensured that I would enjoy classical music for life.

You brought music into my life.

The recording you mention was one of my first ever on a Decca 10" LP.
