Take a look at the New Year's Day Concerts from 1989 and 1992. Kleiber produces sheer magic from the Vienna Philharmonic and just watch how his movements conjure up the poetry of the wonderful music.

Let me add that there are several live Bayreuth Tristan performances on various private labels (1973 on Melodram, 1974 on Opera d'Oro, 1975 on Memories) as well as a Stuttgart Tristan from 1973 on Living Stage. Some of these are probably still available as downloads, and they are immensely worth hearing.

Also not published commercially but available intermittently on Memories is CK's stupendous Strauss Heldenleben with the Vienna PO.

Oh Caliban (you are no child of Sycorax!), this is EXACTLY why I'm doing a program on Kleiber. This is wonderful; thank you so much. (Now I have to find out how to embed U-Tube onto my hard drive for power point as I simply MUST have this musical moment.) And that orchestra; I saw them in their home last year - they glow in the dark.

My group are retirees and our organization is U3A; in the music group there are 2 retired music academics/musicians and about 4 other very knowledgeable people (one a chronic Wagner fan who last Thursday called the opening of St. Matthew Passion 'interminable'!!!) and the rest are willing to be 'educated'!!

If it's just a question of downloading the video to your hard-drive, there's a very useful - free - program called iSkysoft Video Converter, which I use: you simply copy a video's url address and click a 'paste url' button and it does it automatically. Yes - I certainly don't buy the Lebrechtian nonsense about Kleiber Senior dying embittered and unfulfilled, though he undoubtedly cast a long shadow over Junior's life and career.
