I don't know what it's like - but I'd expect it to at least be good. Must get round to listening to that set.

I also do like Bernstein a lot in 6, but I know some hate his version(s).

I have also much enjoyed Haitink in 5 (now surely a vintage analogue recording...) and also Koussevitsky in the same symphony.

Somewhat ironically, the only concert I ever went to in Carnegie Hall was with a Russian orchestra conducted by Termirkanov in Tchaik 6. No NYPO that year!

One o't'Classics of t'Gramophone, rfg, with the Vienna Phil - though they seem not to be currently available in a single box (which must surely be my mistake) - i had them in the DECCA Jubilee LP box.

Let's not forget the performance on the First Symphony tomorrow afternoon at which some of our number will be present.

I've only been to one live performance and there was a considerable sense of excitement towards the work's conclusion. It's surprising just how much symphonic tension the work seems to accumulate.

I greatly like 1 & 2 but the 3rd is one that just defeats me. I wonder why it is that symphonic cycles from Tchaikovsky, Bruckner and RVW each contain one symphony with which I can't get on.

In all honesty, I have to agree with you about the 3rd (and, like you, I've really tried to love it). But yes, 1 & 2 are terrific in their different ways.

That might have been one of the concerts I went to with Litton, or perhaps Gatti. They can be forgiven for my not remembering.

Just possibly Markevitch may do something with it on CDs - though I have never really taken to that symphony. All the rest - yes!
